About APER Forum

CEO Message

Opening Address

Distinguished guests,

I am Jong-Keun Park, Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission of Korea.

First of all, I would like to deliver my sincere gratitude to the honorable representatives of the nine member countries, Chairman and CEO Sang-Hee Yoo of Korea Power Exchange, and guests from home and abroad who participate in this APER Forum 2016 today.

According to the forecasts, the global future energy consumption is expected to grow from 549 quadrillion Btu in 2012 to about 815 quadrllion Btu by 2040. Recently, with a new climate change framework convention in effect, coal-based power generation has been on the decline.

In step with these changes, the new and renewable energy markets such as solar, marine, hydro, and wind power are expected to grow rapidly. Accordingly, market for new and renewable energy is estimated to increase each year by about 2.6 percent.

Amid this changing energy market environment, the themes we chose for this Forum, “efforts to increase market flexibility & efficiency”, “restructuring on the energy market’s structure and competitive framework”, and “policies and regulatory initiatives for transitioning to low-carbon economy” are essential tasks for energy market regulators like us.

This APER Forum 2016 will be a good venue to discuss these three themes in depth with participants from diverse member countries. Through this event, we can better understand the energy market trend and find more opportunities to contribute to energy market development.

I also believe that by building mutual cooperative structure among the participants, we can deeply contribute not only to the energy market but also our environment, local economy, mutual trust among the member countries, and even to the world peace.

I hope for your active participation In the Forum so that it will produce more constructive and useful results.

Besides, you came to the autumn of Seoul now. The weather is wonderful here. And Seoul is the beautiful capital city of South Korea with plenty of cultural heritage. So before I close, I would like to express my wish that you all enjoy the culture of Seoul together as well.

Thank you.

Jong Keun Park,
Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission
